West Bengal Directs Grants to 20 Kolkata Wards for Infrastructure Work

The West Bengal Legislative Assembly passed the Local Governance Enhancement Bill on 3 July, allocating targeted grants to 20 of Kolkata's 144 municipal wards for road resurfacing and drainage upgrades starting in the current fiscal year.

The measure follows the tabling of the 2026-27 state budget papers in June, which identified gaps in ward-level infrastructure maintenance across the Kolkata Municipal Corporation area. Assembly records show the bill requires the state government to release funds directly to selected wards rather than through a uniform city-wide distribution.

Residents in the designated wards will see crews address potholes and clogged drains on streets such as those in parts of Beliaghata and Taltala by the end of 2026. Households in the remaining 124 wards continue to rely on existing maintenance schedules set by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation without additional state grants under this bill.

Local advocates note that the selection criteria listed in the legislation favour wards with documented flood complaints from the 2025 monsoon season. Commuters on routes linking these wards to central markets may experience shorter detours once repairs begin, while workers in non-selected wards report no change to their daily travel conditions.

Budget figures and rollout timeline

State budget documents attached to the bill list a total outlay of 120 crore rupees for the selected projects. The funds cover material purchases and labour contracts managed by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation engineering division.

Implementation is scheduled to begin on 1 August with tender notices issued by the corporation. The legislation requires quarterly progress reports to be submitted to the assembly's public accounts committee by December 2026.
